    What is Mobile Broadband?

       

      Mobile broadband is the service that allows you to be connected to the internet using a modem in your PC.

      You don't need a landline.  You simply insert a SIM card into your modem.

    What is a modem?

       

      A modem looks like a small USB stick. It is used to connect to the internet on-the-go.

    What is the difference between 3.5G Mobile Broadband and Wifi?

       

      Wifi is a technology used to connect laptops in small areas. The 3.5G has a much broader coverage and works also with a broader range of mobile devices. With a Mobile Broadband modem you will connect to the internet everywhere there is Oman Mobile coverage (speed varies according to your area, just like WiFi)

    What is the difference between the Mobile Broadband and ADSL?

       

      With Mobile broadband you don't need a landline. You can access the internet wherever you are, not only at home- as long as there is mobile coverage. Speed will differ according to the area.

    Is the speed guaranteed?

       

      No, like ADSL, the actual speed will depend on several factors. The most important one being the coverage in your area and the number of people nearby using the service at the same time.

    What will affect the speed?

       

      The distance to the network antenna, the building you are in, the number of people connected, the computer you are using and the type of modem.

    What is 3.5G Video Calling?

       

      You can see and be seen by the person you are calling. It works very similar to webcam conversations from pc to pc, but it is done on the mobile.

    Can I return the USB modem if I don't have coverage?

       

      No. However, Oman Mobile provides extensive coverage, therefore it is highly unlikely that you will have no signal.

      We are rolling out our 3.5G fast and every day the coverage expands. If you don't have 3.5G coverage, you will probably have very good EDGE coverage, which also gives you good speeds.

    Why use the USB modem instead of ADSL?

       

      The USB Modem is compact and portable; you can use it easily in any computer and the tariffs are highly competitive.

    How do I get 3.5G?
     

    Do I need to change the SIM Card for 3G broadband?

       

      No, you just need to have a 3G device (modem or handset). You will be automatically upgraded to the 3.5G speeds.

    How else can I get 3.5G broadband?

       

      You can buy laptops featuring built-in 3G broadband capability. You will just need to insert the SIM Card in the appropriate slot on your PC. Ask for a laptop with 3G connectivity if you are thinking of buying a new one.

    Do I need to subscribe to any plan?

    I already have a USB modem from other operator. Can I use it with an Oman Mobile SIM Card?

       

      Yes, whether you have a modem bought in Oman or abroad, you can use the Oman Mobile SIM Card as long as the modem is not locked. Modems sold in the Middle East are commonly unlocked and you will have no problem in using an Oman Mobile SIM Card.

      After inserting the SIM Card, you will just need to enter the TAIF configurations to connect for the first time
      .

    How will 3.5G service appear on my bill?

       

      You will see the data traffic as it currently appears on your bill, under the TAIF services.
       

      If you subscribe to a plan, it will appear in the plans section on your bill.

    What does 'out-of-bundle' mean?

       

      The Oman Mobile's mobile broadband plans allow you to use a certain volume of data or help you get hooked online for a certain amount of time per month, e.g.

      The 10 hour package allows you to access Mobile broadband for 10 hours per month.
      The 15 GB package allows you to use 15 GB of data per month.

       

      If your usage exceeds your package in any month (billing period), you will be charged with the 'out-of-bundle' rate for the additional usage.

    Will I receive one or two separate bills?

       

      If you are getting a new SIM Card, you will receive a separate bill for that SIM Card. SAWA customers will receive a single bill.

    What can I do with 1GB?

       

      -  You can send/ receive approximately 2500 high resolution photos.
      -  Send/ receive approximately 100,000 text-only emails.
      -  Open approximately 5000 word documents.
      -  View approximately 8000 web pages.

      -  Open approximately 2500 Adobe pdf files.

    What happens if I exceed my chosen tariff plan?

       

      If you are subscribed to a 10 or 30 hour package you will be charged an out-of-bundle rate of 20Bz/min.

       

      If you are subscribed to a 1GB, 15GB or 30GB package you will be charged an out-of-bundle rate of 0.005Bz/KB.

    Do I need to sign up?

       

      No, you can already start using the services. To subscribe to any plan, just call our Call Center, visit one of our shops or send an SMS to 90898 with the name of the plan you want.

    How long does it take to start using 3.5G Mobile Broadband?

       

      The modem installation takes around 3 minutes and it is done automatically.

    If I subscribe to the 10 hour or 30 hour package does that mean I will be able to use internet only for 10 or 30 consecutive hours from the time of subscription?

       

      No, the 10 and 30 hour packages can be consumed in multiple sessions throughout the month.

    Can I exchange my fixed broadband for a 3.5G Mobile Broadband?

       

      No, those products are sold separately.

    Can I monitor my usage?

       

      Most of the modems have a usage monitoring feature on their software.

    How do I use 3.5G?
     

    Can I share the internet connection?

       

      The modem can be shared by many users on any PC or Laptop. You can also buy an Oman Mobile wireless router if you want to share the connection with a number of users at the same time.

    Where can I purchase a modem?

       

      You can buy a modem from any Oman Mobile or Omantel shop, or you can simply buy our SIM card and use it inside any unlocked modem.

    Why do we have a fair use policy?

       

      We want you to enjoy surfing the internet, and our fair use policy is there to make sure you have the best experience. There might be some customers who use so much data that it affects the quality of everyone else's surfing.

    Will I be able to view videos?

      Yes. The modem is a plug and play device, so simply plug in the device in another laptop and it will install the software.

    Can I use my Oman Mobile modem in any laptop or desktop computer?

       

      You can use your modem is most PCs, laptops and Apple Macs. Each modem may vary slighty depending upon the Operating System you use on your computer (e.g. Microsoft Windows). To ensure your PC, laptop or Mac is supported, please check the system requirements of the device.

    What comes in the box with the modem?

       

      The contents of the box will vary depending on the modem purchased. Please refer to to the product specific page.

    Can I use it also as a memory stick?

       

      Yes, you can insert a micro SD card on your E180 modem to expand the internal memory.

    Is Mobile Broadband secure?

       

      It is secure as fixed broadband.

    Will it work with my Apple PC?

       

      The majority of Oman Mobile modems work with Mac OS X. Please refer to the product specific pages to check device requirements and compatibility.

    How do I know if I'm in a 3.5G coverage area?

       

      If you have a 3G phone you will see a small "3G" sign on the upper left side of your scree. Depending on the handset it can appear as "3.5G" or "3G+" when you are in 3G coverage area. "H" can also be seen in some handsets indicating HSDPA coverage

    Do I have to pay something to get a 3.5G plan?

       

      No. If you have 3G phone you can use 3.5G without additional charges.
