Omantel Reaches Trial Download speed 1Gbps using
Omantel, the Sultanate’s pioneer provider of total communications solutions has announced the successful trial of 4G LTE advanced pro technology that has reached peak download speeds of up to 1Gbps. The trial was achieved through Omantel spectrums. The achievement paves the way for providing high speeds to the customers which is anticipated to take place in the future.
The development is yet another milestone for Omantel and takes the Company one step closer to implementing comprehensive Internet of Things technology in the Sultanate.
Commenting on this important step taken by Omantel, Chief Operating Officer Eng. Samy Ahmed Al Ghassany noted, “The trial gave impressive results where we were able to achieved peak download speeds of (1Gbps) using the 4G LTE advanced pro technology, which is considered a significant milestone in our roadmap utilizing our spectrum assets to test the network and prepare for the technological evolution to 5G.
Eng. Al Ghassany added; “As technology innovators and pioneers, we believe that through mobility and connectivity services, our society can be transformed. This breakthrough brings us one step closer to the realization of Omantel’s vision for Oman, to become a truly networked society, where lives are enriched through connectivity.”
It is worth mentioning that Omantel became the first provider in the Sultanate to introduce 4G LTE networks in 2012. In 2015 Omantel’s total network investments reached over 120 million Rials, which led to introducing 4.5G technology in April 2015 that enables speeds of up to 200mbps, as well as expanding the 4G LTE network to reach over 86 percent of the population in Oman.

Omantel Launches ‘Saloon Maan’ for Nationwide SME Videoconferencing
Omantel, the Sultanate’s first telecoms provider has recently launched ‘Saloon Maan’, an initiative that provides videoconferencing solutions for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) and the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Riyada). Saloon Maan forms part of Omantel’s transformative 3.0 strategy to build digital society and to launch innovative business and eGovernment services throughout 2016 and beyond.
Commenting on Omantel’s partnership with OCCI and Riyada, Omantel CEO Talal Al Mamari noted, “We believe that through mobility and connectivity services, our society can be transformed. Omantel Named Among Top Wholesale Operators at the MVNO World Congress 2016
Omantel, the first integrated telecommunication services provider in the Sultanate, has been named among the world’s top wholesale operators at the 2016 Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) World Congress hosted by Informa Telecoms & Media.
Omantel was highly commended and ranked second in the category of Best Wholesale Operator behind UK provider EE (part of British Telecom Group) at the awards ceremony held in Amsterdam, Holland on the 13th of April 2016. The recognition is the most recent addition to the growing number of awards and accolades received by Omantel within the global telecommunications wholesale arena.
Commenting on the achievement, Eng. Omantel First GCC Operator to Land Undersea Cable in Europe with AAE-1 in Marseille
Omantel, the Sultanate’s leading telecommunications provider today announced the successful landing of the Asia Africa Europe-1 (AAE-1) cable system in the French city of Marseille. Spanning approximately 25,000 kilometers, the AAE-1 submarine cable is one of the first unique cable systems to connect Hong Kong to Singapore, Africa and Europe, all via Oman. The cable will provide an alternative and low latency short route between Hong Kong, Singapore and Europe while covering close to 50% of the world’s population.
Commenting on the achievement, Talal Said Al Mamari Omantel CEO noted, “The decision to join hands with Marseille to become the landing site for AAE-1 was an easy one as the city is a critical telecommunications connectivity hub, a key trade port and an entry way into Europe.”
“This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the city of Marseille. To land a cable of this magnitude requires permits and regulatory approvals from many areas within the government. Our experience of Marseille is a city that is professional, business oriented and one that welcomes foreign investment,” added Talal Al Mamari.
The AAE-1 landing was made possible through the creation of Omantel France, an Omantel subsidiary company tasked with ensuring that the AAE-1 cable system is able to deliver seamless connectivity between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia while offering operators an alternative access point in Europe. Omantel’s carrier neutral landing facilities and new data centers in Marseille gives carriers competitive access to and from Europe via the AAE-1 cable system. Network operators arriving in Europe or seeking to access undersea cable infrastructure are often faced with expensive backhaul and interconnect costs due to monopolistic pricing. Operators in Europe that need to connect their networks to a landing station usually have no alternative but to pay. The Omantel facility will have an open and neutral model in the Interxion data centers in Marseille which will give operators new and affordable access to undersea cable infrastructure.
Omantel’s extensive international network will provide additional protection and diversity to the AAE-1 cable system through other systems like EPEG, which is a major high-capacity system consisting of redundant undersea cables to Iran and onwards terrestrial cable all the way via Azerbaijan and Russia to Frankfurt avoiding existing heavily congested cable systems and crowded bottlenecks on the route between Asia and Europe.

Revenue Grows by 4.7% to R.O 135.5 Million and Net profit Reaches R.O 34.8 Million
Oman Telecommunications Company S.A.O.G (Omantel. MSM: OTEL), revealed today the Company’s preliminary unaudited financial results for the 1st Quarter ended on 31st March 2016. Group revenue recorded a growth of 4.7% to R.O 135.5 million compared with R.O 129.4 million in the corresponding period of 2015. Cost of Sales increased by 8.4%, while Operating Expenses recorded a decrease of 3.5% compared to the corresponding period.
The Group net profit is RO 34.8 Mn compared to R.O 34.6 million in 2015, an increase of 0.6%. The net profit is propelled by strong domestic performance, which witnessed an impressive revenue growth of 5% contributed mainly by revenues from Fixed and Mobile broadband services and submarine capacity sales.
The above results are preliminary and unaudited and subject to approval of the Board. The final results will be released after the approval of the Board of Directors meeting, which is scheduled on 12th May 2016.

Oman to Become Regional Communications Hub with Omantel’s ‘Gulf to Africa’ Cable
Omantel, the Sultanate’s leading provider of integrated telecommunication services has joined in a consortium with several East African telecommunications providers to lay the Gulf to Africa (G2A) undersea fibre-optic cable, which is set to revolutionize connectivity from Oman to East Africa, including; Ethiopia and Somalia. The G2A undersea cable represents the first phase of Omantel’s expansion eastwards into the African continent, providing cable connectivity to the Middle East, Asia and Europe and transforming Oman into a communications hub of the Middle East.
The G2A undersea cable consortium includes Omantel, Ethio Telecom from Ethiopia and Golis Telecom and the Telesom Company from Somalia. The state-of-the-art cable system, scheduled for completion by the end of 2016, will comprise 1,500km Subsea segment and a 1,500km terrestrial segment with a capacity 20Tbits of capacity with the latest 100G technology.
Commenting on the regional and global importance of the G2A project, the Vice President of Omantel Wholesale Sohail Qadir noted, “This is the first step in our journey of expansion into Africa. We will connect Oman directly to Somalia via the Salalah cable landing point, and then extend the cable further into Africa to Ethiopia. Omantel Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Cisco to Transform Its Service Platform through Innovation
Omantel, the Sultanate’s leading telecommunications operator has signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cisco for managed network and data center solutions and the provision of cloud services, according to the company’s new transformation strategy.
Talal Al Mamari, CEO of Omantel said, “The underlying goal of our transformative Omantel 3.0 strategy is to deliver the best customer propositions available and deploy innovative business and eGovernment services, that will deliver solutions that go way beyond business as usual. The MoU paves the way for greater collaboration with Cisco to drive Omantel’s strategy in playing a leading role in the Sultanate’s digitization. As part of the MoU, Omantel and Cisco will work on developing value creating opportunities in the domains of next-generation Cloud and Managed Services solutions, cloud and hosting services, and the internet of Things (IoT). The agreement also paves the way for both parties to work together in the areas of knowledge sharing and staff training.
