| | 14/06/2010 | Omantel Restores Telecom Services After Major Cable Cuts Caused By Contractor Within Three Hours of the Cable Cuts | | | | | | Muscat: The fixed telecom services especially the internet were interrupted yesterday due to major cable cuts.
Abdullah Nasib Al Hamer, General Manager of Operation & Maintenance at Omantel said, Major cables cuts occurred yesterday in the Willayat of Bausher causing a partial interruption of fixed telecom services especially the internet in different parts of the Sultanate.
Cable cuts are common in telecom industry. For instance, we had more than forty cable cuts last year and around twenty since the beginning of this year which were not observed by customers as the telecom traffic was rerouted seamlessly through alternative routes. What we had yesterday is several cable cuts on both the main and back up cables and accordingly traffic was manually rerouted through second alternative, Al Hamer added.
Our maintenance teams exerted all their efforts to restore the services at the earliest time possible. The traffic was rerouted through other alternatives and services were gradually restored until we have a full restoration of the service within three hours, Al Hamer pointed out.
Omantel regrets any inconvenience this incident which was caused by reasons beyond the company’s control may have caused to our valuable customers. Despite having two levels of warning tapes, we still witness cable cuts. We urge all contractors to obtain the necessary excavation permits prior to carrying out any excavation work. Omantel has the right to take the appropriate legal actions against contractors damaging its transmission network and harming the interests of its customers, Al Hamer concluded.
