MoHERI inks partnership agreement with Omantel for operating and maintaining ‘OMREN’

Under this contract, Omantel will continue to extend the network’s services to higher education organizations, research centres, and other educational institutions in Oman.

Commenting on the agreement, Warda bint Sarhan Al Habsi, Acting OMREN Director, said, “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Omantel, and we feel that it will enable us to create the aspired connectivity and access between the local academic institutions on one hand and with their overseas counterparts and research networks globally on the other hand. OMREN has become an integral part of MoHERI’s strategy toward achieving Oman Vision 2040 goals that are related to the development of scientific research in Oman.”

OMREN has come to be a central part of a sustainable infrastructure that contributes to the emergence of an effective national innovation ecosystem. It provides the research and education community in Oman with a common network and collaboration infrastructure adapted to their needs.  Omantel is enabling OMREN to provide its members with point-to-point link to international gateways to connect the research community with international organizations such as Internet2, GEANT, APAN and ASREN.

To enrich and promote collaboration between members, OMREN further offers added value services such as video conferencing, SSL certification, federated access as a single sign-on facility, scientific publications, Masader for International scientific publications, Shuaa as Oman Research Repository, eduRoam for WiFi roaming, Mirsal for large files exchange, membership of eduGain, extra broadband links, bulk SMSes, and more.

The first term of this partnership saw more than 50 members join the OMREN network. Collectively, the parties have so far achieved 90% connected universities, 93% connected researchers, 85% connected students, and 100% targeted international connectivity.
